Evidence-Based Practices

When a child loses a parent to incarceration, they may experience significant emotional and psychological trauma. As a result, mental health services are a critical component of our program model.

Children enrolled in our after-school program and their families are all eligible to receive therapeutic support services through our Children of Promise Wellness Group, which include trauma-informed and evidence-based practices.

Licensed

Supportive social workers, creative arts therapists, mental health counselors, and psychiatrists are part of our Children of Promise Wellness Group.

Trauma-Informed Care

The Children of Promise mental health team employs trauma-informed, evidence-supported practices. The services we provide to the children and families are based on an understanding of the prevalence of the traumatic stress caused by incarceration, and the therapeutic practices we employ are healing-centered and family-focused to provide a breadth of support in mitigating the impact of oppressive forces on children and families.

Our model is inclusive, supportive, creative, anti-oppressive, healing, guided by the narratives of those individuals with lived experience of being directly impacted by systems of mass incarceration. Our creative and artistic clinical home offers the children an open and expressive space to share about trauma, loss, grief, depression, anxiety, and fear without any worry that they will be judged for what they are going through.
